A floor is the one surface in a house that every person and every piece of furniture is in contact with all day. It is also the surface people choose the fastest, usually from a photograph, and the one where the decision that matters is invisible once the job is done.

The subfloor decides more than the flooring does

Before anything goes down, the thing underneath has to be worth putting it on:

• Is it flat? Every flooring material has a tolerance for how uneven the surface under it can be, and the rigid ones have the least. A floor laid over a surface outside that tolerance flexes, and what flexes eventually fails.
• Is it sound? Wood that has been damp, a slab with movement, or a previous underlayment that was never right are all things to find before the new floor covers them.
• Is it dry? Moisture coming up through a slab does not care what you put over it.
• What is already there? Whether the existing floor comes up or gets covered changes the height of everything: doors, transitions, appliance clearances, the step into the next room.

Choosing the material

We will talk through the trade-offs before you commit, and we install the material you choose. In plain terms:

• Tile is the most durable and the least forgiving of a subfloor that moves. What it sits on matters more than what it is.
• Luxury vinyl plank handles water and traffic well and is the most tolerant of a floor that is not perfectly level, within limits the manufacturer publishes.
• Laminate is hard-wearing and less happy about standing water, which makes the room it goes in the real decision.
• Engineered wood is more stable than solid wood over a slab, which matters in this part of Texas.
• Carpet is still the right answer in the rooms where it is the right answer, and the pad under it is not the place to save money.

Where a specific product is involved, the manufacturer’s published instructions for that product are the authority on how it must be installed, and following them is not optional if their warranty is going to mean anything.
